Internet in France: WiFi vs local SIM vs eSIM
A practical guide for trips from the UK to France. Compare hotel WiFi, buying a local SIM, roaming, and prepaid eSIM - and get online right after arrival.
If you travel from the UK to France for a city break, you do not want to spend your first hour hunting for connectivity. Paid EU roaming is back on many UK plans, so it is worth planning ahead.
Hotel and cafe WiFi
- Pros: free and fine for big uploads.
- Cons: inconsistent speed, and you are offline on the metro, trains, day trips and transfers.
- Security: treat public networks as untrusted for sensitive tasks.
Buying a local SIM
A local prepaid SIM can be good value for longer stays, but you still need a shop visit and a SIM swap. For short Eurostar trips, that friction often is not worth it.
Prepaid eSIM (recommended for most UK trips)
With an eSIM, you buy online, install on WiFi, and connect when you arrive. Keep your main UK SIM active for calls/SMS, and use the eSIM for data (maps, tickets, rides, restaurant bookings).
- Coverage: uses local partner networks (e.g. Orange (5G)).
- Speed: 5G may be available depending on device/location.
- Cost control: prepaid, no surprise daily charges.
So what is best for tourists?
If you want predictable costs and instant setup, choose a prepaid eSIM. If you stay long-term and need very large data buckets, a local SIM can make sense.
