Travel Guide 2026
Internet in Portugal - WiFi vs SIM vs eSIM
Portugal from the UK after Brexit: compare hotel WiFi, local SIM cards, UK roaming and travel eSIMs. Best pick for Lisbon, Porto and Algarve holidays.
Portugal holidays are often active: city breaks plus a rental car in the Algarve. That means mobile data is more important than you think: navigation, bookings, and messaging outside hotel WiFi.
1) Hotel WiFi
WiFi is useful for backup, but in busy periods it can slow down, and it does not help you on the road or at the beach.
2) Local SIM in Portugal
Local SIMs can be good value, but require a store visit. If you arrive late or do not want to swap SIMs, an eSIM is easier.
3) UK roaming in Portugal
After Brexit, many UK plans charge a daily roaming fee in Europe. On longer trips the cost grows quickly and can include fair-use caps.
4) Travel eSIM (recommended)
A travel eSIM is fast: install on WiFi before travel, then connect on arrival. If available, we use partner networks (e.g. MEO (5G), NOS (5G), Vodafone (5G)).
Quick verdict
- Most UK trips: prepaid eSIM for speed + predictable spend.
- Long stays: local SIM if you need local calls/SMS.
- WiFi only: OK only if you stay inside the hotel.
Arrival checklist (Lisbon, Porto, Algarve)
- Install the eSIM on WiFi before you fly and keep the QR/activation details saved offline.
- Set the eSIM as your data line and keep your UK SIM for calls/SMS/OTP.
- Download offline maps for your first city and the airport–hotel route.
Make your data last longer
- Disable app updates and cloud photo backups on mobile data.
- Stop video auto-play in social apps if you bought a small package.
- Use hotel WiFi for big downloads, but rely on mobile data when you are on the move.
