eSIM & Internet Travel Guides

Country-by-country guides to mobile data, carriers, 4G/5G coverage and eSIM activation for travellers. Pick your destination.

How to use these guides

Start with a country page, then drill down into city guides when you need specifics. We keep it practical: what coverage is usually like, which local operators run the networks, and how to get online quickly after landing.

The same decision pops up everywhere: roaming vs local SIM vs travel eSIM. Roaming is convenient, but it can get pricey or come with fair‑use limits. A local SIM can be great for long stays, but it often means a shop visit and ID checks.

Most short trips are easiest with a prepaid eSIM: install on Wi‑Fi before you travel, then set the eSIM as your data line on arrival. In each guide we also call out airport Wi‑Fi tips and the settings that cause the most “why isn’t this working?” moments.

Quick FAQ

Do I need an unlocked phone? Yes. If your phone is carrier‑locked, the eSIM may install but won’t connect properly. If you’re unsure, check your device settings before you travel (it takes 30 seconds and saves a lot of airport stress).

Will WhatsApp keep working if I use an eSIM? In most cases, yes. WhatsApp is tied to your account/number, not to “which SIM is providing data”. Keep your main SIM active for calls/SMS/OTP, and let the eSIM handle mobile data.

Do I have to enable data roaming for the eSIM? Sometimes. Many travel eSIMs use roaming partner networks, so that toggle is just a technical requirement — you’re still on prepaid data. To avoid accidental charges, keep roaming OFF on your main SIM line.

How much data should I buy? For maps + messaging + tickets, 1–3GB per week is often plenty. If you stream video, upload lots of photos, or hotspot a laptop, plan more (10GB+) and don’t pick “unlimited” blindly — fair‑use throttling matters for video calls.
